Lake Chemung Area In Howell, Michigan

Livingston County is a beautiful area that has many large lakes and ponds that residents are fortunate to have access to.  Howell is no exception with Lake Chemung being one of the largest lakes in the area.  Lake Chemung has many lakefront homes and recreational areas.  One of those areas is Lake Chemung Outdoor Resort.  Residents there have a wonderful place to spend their summers with family and friends.  We are fortunate to be working on an extremely large job in this community.  This is a multi-resident project that when finished will bring a wonderful finish to their lakefront cottages.

Several years ago, the residents of Lake Chemung Outdoor Resort had a vinyl seawall installed on the lakefront.  Although the new wall looked nice when newly finished, it wasn’t long before the residents knew they had a problem.  The pilings seemed to be pushing up and kicking out at the lakebed.  Because of this, water was washing out the sand behind the vinyl seawall and the seawall was quickly failing.  The reason this was happening was because the pilings had only been driven into the lakebed approximately one foot.  The manner in which the tiebacks were installed were also adding to the problem.  Made of wood and not securely fastened to the pilings, the tiebacks were not doing the job that they were intended to do, which is to help hold the pilings in place.  As a result the seawall was falling waterward.

Lake Chemung Outdoor Resort contacted Seaside Seawalls to remedy this problem.  They knew that they had to have a new seawall installed. With our experienced marine contractors, they felt confident that we could install a new steel seawall that would last for decades.  After having several meetings with residents and the board of the community, a total of fourteen residents decided to replace their existing failing seawall.  Each new seawall is between 29 and 45 feet with a total seawall length of 510 feet.  Residents decided to install either a black steel seawall or a galvanized steel seawall because of the life span and warranty that a steel seawall provides.  One of the major issues was the lack of access for machinery to install the new seawall.  With the advantage of having a barge to do much of the work from the waterside of the seawall, Seaside Seawalls was ready for the challenge.

Understanding the construction of a properly installed seawall is one of the most important components of success and longevity of your seawall.  Seaside Seawall’s marine contractors know that constructing a long lasting seawall is more than just pushing pilings into the ground.  It takes experience, the correct tools and knowledge to successfully install a seawall that will last for years.  There are many factors that our contractors take into consideration that make every seawall unique. Some of these factors will determine the lifespan of your seawall.  Ground pressure and ice pressure is extremely important along with the soil type on the lakebed, just to name a few.  If all the factors are not taken into consideration when constructing your seawall, you will more than likely have problems down the line.  Because Seaside Seawalls is confident in our work, we provide a 10 year installation and material guarantee against ice and ground pressure on our new steel seawalls and galvanized seawalls.

We hope that you will follow along as work progresses at our Lake Chemung project.  The transformation will be amazing and you will see the difference in workmanship by our excellent team of marine contractors.  We are extremely excited about this job and hope that you enjoy watching the progression from beginning to end.
