How Seawalls Prevent Muskrat Damage To Shorelines

How Seawalls Prevent Muskrat Damage

A common problem that lakeshore home owners often face is the destructive burrowing of the muskrat. Muskrats can live in almost any place where food and water is available year-round. Muskrats are capable of destroying waterside landscaping by burrowing into the banks. The muskrat tends to burrow near the surface usually 6-12 inches therefore leaving the tunnels with very little overhead support and they tend to collapse quickly. Eventually this can cause drainage and flooding problems which can be costly. Burrowing can also damage docks, boathouses and lake shorelines. Not only do they contribute to damaging the shoreline, they can also pose a physical risk to nearby residents. Burrows can cause a hazard to anyone who might fall and trip into one of these traps. Often burrowing will not be evident until serious damage is already done. If muskrats persist, your most realistic option may be to reinforce the embankment before major shoreline erosion occurs.
One of the most successful deterrents of these pesky rodents can be a well built sea wall. Sea walls protect the shoreline from a burrowing muskrat and prevent shoreline erosion. Steel seawalls, galvanized seawalls or vinyl seawalls are all a viable barrier to this potentially damaging critter. Steel seawalls are not only extremely effective in controlling shoreline erosion, they are also the most effective in withstanding ice pressure during the winter months.  Steel seawalls come in two different types of metal, galvanized and black steel. Galvanized seawalls are equally as effective as a black steel seawall but maintain a gray appearance. They are also ideal for withstanding our harsh Michigan winters. Seaside Seawall contractors also make drainage areas with the steel seawalls or galvanized seawalls.  Vinyl seawalls are also effective in controlling shoreline erosion from muskrat damage and are ideal for smaller waterways or areas of low to moderate ice pressure. Vinyl seawalls come in several color options: clay, gray and brown.
An effective sea wall will prevent muskrats from having access to your shoreline and will therefore protect your property. If you are noticing burrowing or other signs of muskrat activity, you might want to consider having a sea wall installed. Seaside Seawall contractors can bring back the beauty and safety of your shoreline. If muskrats have damaged your current sea wall, Seaside Seawall contractors can also repair the damage already caused. Contact us today for a free estimate for a new sea wall or seawall repair.
